Curious to know how many people work full time from home? On the 2000 USA Census, people were asked "How did you usually get to work last week"? One of the possible responses was "Worked at Home". This is usually defined to mean the most number of days during the week. Therefore, if someone worked at home more than then worked elsewhere (such as in an office), then they were considered as "Worked at home" for the purpose of the survey.
The 2000 census shows that the USA had almost 4.2 Million people that worked from home last week. This represents about 3.3% of our workforce. Of this group, about 53% are female. The census also breaks down the workforce into many other views such as: Age bracket, Education Level, Race, Occupation, Industry and Earnings. It also gives a breakdown of the statistics state by state.
Here's a link to the 2000 US Census Bureau Working at Home survey results.

Another Census Bureau website worth visiting is the 1992 Characteristics of Business Owners Survey.  There are a number of very interesting links on the site.

Here's a 1997 government report entitled "Home Based Workers in the USA"  (pdf file)
