When creating a webpage, you should consider targeting a niche market. A niche is : "a special area of demand for a product or service"...in other words, a specialty website. This means that your trying to target a small , very specific, group of viewers to the site. You're going after uncommon search terms.

Why go after a niche market?

1. Search Engine Ranking : Your rank can make or break your website. How high your website is on the Search Engine list for specific keywords will dictate how much overall traffic you receive. You need to be realistic, you have an extremely slim chance of appearing high on a search engine results if the keywords you're targeting are very common words (example: business, sex, investing, wall street, Britney Spears, music). Try to go after less common terms. There's less competition and therefore a higher probability for success.

2. Advertisers: Once you have an established niche website, you can approach advertisers of products within that specialty area. For example: A manufacturer of mountain bikes would much rather advertise on a mountain biking themed website than a generic news website. Make it easy for your advertisers to reach their target audience and you'll have an easier time attracting and keeping their business.

3. Competition: You will have much less competition for viewers in a niche website. If you have a website with a very common theme, you can lose your viewers to another website easily.  Having a niche website will help to extend a dedicated audience.

Here's a website that can give you a good idea of the number of searches for a specific keyword or phrase. It will tell you how many times the word/phrase was search last month by using the Yahoo search engine.
